Former New York Jets wide receiver Stephen Hill and rookie free agent Kadron Boone were in Charlotte for workouts on Monday, but both players are headed home without deals.
Head coach Ron Rivera spoke to the media Monday saying that the team has not extended offers to the receivers at this time, but stopped short of ruling out the possibility in the future. This means the Panthers will enter their Week 1 matchup against the Buccaneers with their current stable of receivers.
Hill and Boone would have brought different things to the table. The former had potential down the line to be an impact player, provided wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl was able to improve the former second-round pick where other coaches had failed. Boone could have been a back-end receiver on the roster and add to special teams.
It would have been nice to see some new blood at receiver, but there are young players who could turn into valuable contributors this season. Undrafted free agent Philly Brown could still show something as a fourth or fifth option, while Brenton Bersin finally cracked the roster and could be an excellent red zone target due to his size.
