Congratulations to Cwatt34 for being the first to come up with the correct answer!
The answer, of course, is Brenton Bersin, who is turning out to be quite the local story.
After breaking all of the receiving records at Charlotte Latin, Bersin was ready to show the college football world just how good he had become. There was only one problem. None of his considerable accomplishments were acceptable enough to attract recruiters from major FBS colleges. Instead, he was only afforded the opportunity to compete in the FCS. Interestingly, the coaches at Wofford University were able to convince the Charlotte native to play receiver for them even though their offensive philosophy centered around running the football. In fact, this was their first, second and third priority.
To be sure, Bersin didn't get as many chances as receivers from most other colleges, but when given the opportunity to make a play, he didn't let them down. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment while playing for the Terriers was finishing his senior year with nine receiving touchdowns, which tied the record held for fifty years by his next-door neighbor, who just so happened to be the Carolina Panthers' owner. That's right, not only did the Bersin family rub shoulders with Jerry Richardson and his family, but he was also able to attend the franchise's very first game at Clemson stadium all the way back in 1995.
Of course, Bersin is no longer the kid who was once knocking on his neighbor's door. He is a man now and he's doing a fine job of knocking on the door of making the Panthers' 53 man roster. I realize it's quite tempting to view this enviable position through the lens of nepotism and privilege, but I refuse to be cynical about the situation. This isn't about family favors. It's about turning a childhood dream into reality through hard work, patience and perseverance. Bersin deserves his current standing and, like you, I'll be cheering for him all the way.
