Hello again, CSR.... the game is back!!!
Last week, we looked at sacks on the Defensive side of the ball. This week.... we're looking at sacks allowed on the offensive side of the ball.
The following are the sack numbers for the last 3 years:
2011: 35 sacks
2012: 36 sacks
2013: 43 sacks
Key OL losses: Jordan Gross (LT), Travelle Wharton (LG)
Key OL Additions: Trai Turner (RG)
Byron Bell had the dubious distinction of leading our team in sacks allowed with 9 and QB pressures with 31, per PFF. He was tied for sacks allowed by..... Cam Newton, who was held responsible for 9 of his own sacks. Second on the OL for sacks and pressures was.... Jordan Gross, who allowed 6 sacks and 22 pressures in 2013.
Nate Chandler had a horrific 1st 3 games at RG, with a -12.1 PFF grade (close to -9.0 in pass blocking)... but we went 3-0 against San Fran, Miami and NE during that stretch. He had a +2.0 grade at OT prior to the move and the team agrees that he is a better fit at OT based on the 3-year extension he received. The drafting of Turner all but ensures that Chandler never has to play OG again.
We're also destined to run more 12 personnel sets this year.... so we should expect more chipping/double teams on edge rushers to help the OTs out.
So CSR..... you've seen the numbers... you've seen the players working to improve... you know how you feel....
42.5 sacks allowed for 2014.... are you taking the Over?.... or are you taking the Under?
