I know this is not really Panthers material, but I did want to share it with my fellow Panther Fans here on CSR. Yesterday a great football player and better man died way too young in a car accident. I am sure most have seen the news, but it was Phillip Lutzenkirchen. I have said many times that I wished the Panthers would give him a shot. He was one of my favorite all time Auburn players. He holds the record for most TDs by a tight end for Auburn, and was immortalized for catching the winning TD in the 2010 Iron Bowl. That pass, of course, was thrown by our very own Cam Newton.
Lutz was known for being that go to guy. In his last year at Auburn he was one of the only players with the hands to be able to pull in the errant passes from our merry-go-round of QBs. As you can tell in this highlight video.
And, of course, my favorite. This ridiculous one handed catch.
But, more than any of this on the field, he was a fan favorite because of his character. He was the guy everyone liked. He is one of the VERY few Auburn players that even Bama fans both liked and respected. Whether it was taking the girl with down syndrome to the prom or, the way he used his free time to visit young cancer patients, or just the way he always carried himself with class. He was a great football player, and will always be one of my all time favorite Auburn players. War Damn Eagle Phillip Lutzenkirchen, and RIP.
