So as many of you have probably heard the Kansas City Chiefs released the pro-bowl corner Brandon Flowers. Now don't get over excited just yet, he counted as 7.5mil against the Chiefs cap which was deemed a partial reason for his being cut (according to Greg Rosenthal).
So I would imagine a similar cap hit to whomever decides to pay him, but GMs are mathematicians in their ways of constructing deals and nothing is out of the question. This offseason I used different websites to try and follow NFL cap salaries and have found sporttrac.com to be reliable. Now a team like the Jets who are in dire need of corners and have 24mil left in the bank emerge as a forerunner but Rex Ryan has always had a thing for larger CBs and Brandon doesn't quite fit that profile.
The Bengals, Packers, Texans, and Falcons all have more money than us and could use a corner of his quality. The only two factors that lead me to believe that we emerge ahead of them is that 1) we haven't had a true number one corner since Chris Gamble in 2011 and even that was pushing it. 2) Riverboat Ron is ready to gamble.
The only thing the Panthers are missing on defense is a solid corner that can rotate to the slot. Flowers is what we were hoping for with the Captain. I think if we can land him on a 4 year deal with more money guaranteed down the stretch and maybe 3-4mil in bonuses this year would leave us with just under 2mil to work the season. The only problem is that would leave us screwed next season.
