We entered the next season with almost the exact same roster as the year before. We went 8-8 that year and started down a very dark path culminating in that disastrous 2-14 season the year after. The reason I bring this up is not to say that we will do this again but to argue that our Front Office and Coaching staff seem to be taking the right steps to avoid such a drastic back-slide over the next few seasons.
For one they are taking the stance that the status quo was not good enough, and in all honesty I agree. Other than Steve Smith and Greg Olsen we did not have a reliable target for Cam and Steve dropped more than his fair share last year as well. We were ranked 29th in pass offense and scored fewer points last year than any other team to make the playoffs. We needed to be able to spread the field and attack vertically and by going out an gettin KB with our first pick along with the sure handed veterans we brought in addresses this need rather well. Another flaw in our offense that has been addressed over the off-season is our tendency to be overly conservative with the playcall. Hopefully the new offensive consultant we hired will be able to show Shula how predictable his plays tend to be. I truly believe that this team is taking steps towards being a perennial powerhouse and we are adding the pieces to challenge for the super bowl every year.
