Panthers Have 9th Youngest Offensive Line in NFL

Streeter Lecka

You could also say they have the 24th oldest line. Either way I just wonder what players they included in the calculation.

Seriously, who did they use for the right side of the line because I'm having a hard time recreating their number. Plus I just wonder if they know something I don't because I have only educated guesses as to who will start.

My first thought was using the returning veteran starters (age of player going from left tackle to right tackle):

LT Bell 25
LG Silatolu 25
C Kalil 29
RG Scott 26
RT Williams 27
AVG 26.4

They got 26.0 so I'm thinking that is a little far off. So my next thought was maybe they plugged in the rookie OG from LSU:

LT Bell 25
LG Silatolu 25
C Kalil 29
RG Turner 20
RT Williams 27
AVG 25.2

Wow Turner is really young. Now the average is too low. I guess it could be a rounding error if they included months. Might they have included Edmund Kugbila at RG? I'm not sure why they would do that but here it is anyway:

LT Bell 25
LG Silatolu 25
C Kalil 29
RG Kugbila 23
RT Williams 27
AVG 25.8

Okay now we are definitely within a rounding error if they rounded to the month versus just the year. But still I can't help but think I should be able to nail such a simple calculation given it's only five numbers. Wait! I was overlooking a key guy because for some reason the Panthers list him on the roster as a generic OL instead of at OG or T.

LT Bell 25
LG Silatolu 25
C Kalil 29
RG Chandler 24
RT Williams 27
AVG 26.0

Boom! There it is!

So putting on my Homer hat I would say we have a fairly young offensive line but it's not lacking in experience. We have the veteran Pro Bowler in the middle calling the protections in Kalil. The youngest guy Nate Chandler has 8 starts under his belt from 2013. Byron Bell has 41 starts at RG, Garry Williams got 20 starts at RG or RT in the two seasons he wasn't out for injury and Amini Silatolu has 18 starts in the 19 weeks he wasn't injured. So we do have experience if not a lot of confidence. The coaches must be seeing some positive things on those game tapes right? I'm sure they do.
