We all love to parrot the philosophy of best player available, but how strong are your convictions? The obvious need would be a wide receiver, tackle, or cornerback, but what if a hog mollie blue goose defensive lineman dropped to the Panthers at 28? Here is a very real possibility that could shake out in this draft, three players to consider for the 28th pick but who to choose.
First we have a falling star (a cliche I know....) defensive tackle that dominated at during the season, destroyed the competition at the senior bowl and had a great combine. Rated by NFL.com as the 2nd best defensive lineman and Mike Mayock’s top defensive tackle in this draft. Interestingly enough Mike Mayock think’s it’s a real possibility that he could drop to the bottom of the first round or even early second. During a conference call with the press Mayock had this to say about the standout defensive tackle.
"If defensive tackle Aaron Donald makes it past the Bears (No. 14) or Cowboys (No. 16), he could slide down the board, said Mayock. Donald is one of Mayock's favorite players in the draft but notes teams are concerned about his height."
As a Panthers fan how do you react to Donald being on the board at 28? On the one hand you have arguably the best player left on the board, but do you draft 3 tackles with your first and second picks two years in a row.
A fan favorite and a glaring need for the Panthers. By now everyone has seen Lee’s highlights. If Lee would have stayed healthy for the 2013 season pundits would be arguing whether the first wide receiver off the board would be Watkins or Lee. So the Panthers may benefit from another player who has health concerns, if Lee can return to his 2012 form. Jaxon mocked Lee to the Panthers in the SB Nation bloggers mock and was generally well received by Panthers fans and NFL fans alike. Lee tends to fall on most draft boards between 25-30 which makes him a perfect fit at 28.
Now here is the reach. Moses is a player on my board that is pegged between 40-45. Most NFL draft gurus think the Panthers will jump on him at 28. I think he could be an average right tackle in the NFL and wouldn't hesitate to draft him if he fell to the 60th pick. Supply and demand rule the NFL draft, with what it seems the best four tackles off the board by pick 12, the Panthers will sit in a precarious position. At 19 the Dolphins are in desperate need of a left tackle. The next tier of tackles that will be available at 19 are Morgan Moses, Joel Bitonio and Cyrus Kouandjio all of whom could make an early impact with the Dolphins.
According to Gil Brandt the Dolphins are very interested in trading down.
Also Tony Pauline of Draft Insider had this to say,
"Sources seem to think Hickey will attempt to trade down if the opportunity arises. If they are able to trade down Joel Bitonio, a name that keeps popping up in the late first/early second round area, is a player they like. "
If the Dolphin’s don’t have much interest at 19 in Moses then it’s likely that he’ll be on the board for the Panthers.
How BPA are you?
