One of the biggest question marks for the Panthers going into the upcoming season is the Tackle position. The retirement of Jordan Gross has left a huge void on Cam Newton's blindside and going into the recent draft many were hoping that void could be filled. Unfortunately, the Panthers left the draft with empty pockets, feeling options available in the draft were less talented than our current depth at the position.
One interesting prospect who could add depth to the position is David Foucault, a rookie camp invitee from our neighbor to the north. Foucault is a "HOG Mollie" if ever there was one, standing 6’ 8" and weighing in around 320lbs. He was recently selected as the 5th overall pick in the CFL draft by the Montreal Alouettes.
Foucault was the starting LT for the University of Montreal and played some at right guard. I was not able to find quality video on him, but in the one highlight video I did see, he is a complete mauler, plays to the whistle and seems to have a nasty streak. I noticed that once contact was initiated, Foucault used his size and strength to take the defender out of the play. He is very raw and might have trouble with speed rushers and defenders with good inside moves, but with proper coaching and repetition could be corrected. Below are his combine numbers.
· Bench 22 reps
· 40 5.28
· Broad 7’9"
· Vertical 33.5
· Shuttle 4.61
· 3-cone 7.50
It is hard to judge how Foucault will do against this level of competition, but from what I have seen, I am optimistic he could add depth to the position and at the very least find a place on the practice squad. Under Dave Gettleman’s regime, it is clear that he will leave no stone unturned in finding talent to add depth to the roster. Let's hear it CSR on my first post and your thoughts on this potential Panther.
