GMan and the Draft

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2014 draft only weeks away, and the debate about what players and what positions the Carolina Panthers should draft in full bloom, I thought I would take a look at GMans first pass at drafting.

In 2013, the Carolina Panthers had the #14 pick as the first of only five selections. The pressure was on, and GMan was up to the task.

The arguments were almost the same last year as they are this year. In 2013, the Panthers masses were screaming for DBs WRs and a NT. Although there were a few looking for OT's, the majority were focused on the glamour positions. They would be disappointed.

ProFootballFocus ran articles grading the 2nd round picks after week 8 and the 1st round picks at the end of the year. How do you think GMan did?

First Round Grades

14. Star Lotulelei, DT, Carolina Panthers

Grade: +15.1

Snaps: 620

Only one guy selected before Star graded higher. No one selected later than Star graded higher!

13. Sheldon Richardson, DE, New York Jets

Grade: +30.4

Snaps: 906

Second Round Grades

44. Kawann Short, DT, Carolina Panthers

Grade: +2.7

Snaps: 258

Only 4 Second Rounds picks with a higher grade and they are RB's, a NT, and an ILB

37. Giovani Bernard, RB, Cincinnati Bengals

Grade: +8.1

Snaps: 270

46. Kiko Alonso, ILB, Buffalo Bills

Grade: +5.5

Snaps: 626

49. Johnathan Hankins, DT, New York Giants

Grade: +2.9

Snaps: 60

61. Eddie Lacy, RB, Green Bay Packers

Grade: +6.0

Snaps: 286

We really can not grade Big Kug as he was on IR. I think that Klein would also have to be considered one of the better 5th round picks. Grabbing Tavarres King off the Bronco's Practice Squad actually gives us another 5th rounder.

Then we add the UDFA's: Melvin White, Robert Lester, and Wes Horton.

I think that I am comfortable with GMan making the picks. He obviously viewed the interior D Line as the biggest weakness, and he addressed it well. I think that this year we will see the same focus on the O Line.

If GMan can repeat the 2013 performance, I believe we will finally have a perennial playoff franchise.
