This is a comparison between two players with stats from their final year of college and their NFL Combine results.
Size- 6' 1" and 210 lbs
40 time- 4.60
Size- 5' 11" and 205 lbs
40 time- 4.77
These are two very similar players, with player A having the height and speed advantage, but Player B having the advantage in yards and receptions. Player A is proven NFL receiver James Jones, a great #2 receiver who recently signed a 3 year contract with the Oakland Raiders after many successful season as a reliable target for Aaron Rodgers. Jones played at San Jose State, and after having a breakout senior year with the numbers above, got drafted in the 3rd round by the Green Bay Packers in the 2007 NFL Draft.
Player B is former LSU receiver Jarvis Landry, who I think should be one of the Panthers' top priorities in this upcoming draft. Not only did Landry play in a much more difficult conference than Jones did, he also managed to put up better numbers than Jones. Landry's unimpressive 40 time and his mediocre size have caused his draft stock to fall, to the point where the Panthers could pick him up in the 2nd or 3rd, which would both be great values.
Now I believe that if we can spend our first 2 picks on other needs such as O-Line and secondary, and we got lucky and Landry fell to us in the 3rd round, we should undeniably draft him. If we can get a James Jones type prospect in the 3rd round, I think the Panthers will be sitting pretty.
