Panther Draft Strategy - Take a QB in the First

First, let me say this is what happens when we have to wait this long for the actual draft: we get the opportunity to over-think all the possibilities!

A lot of us are looking for additional picks: I see this as the opportunity to pick up a veteran of high value or a 2015 First Rounder. I do not believe there will be an overwhelming pick available to us at #28, but it might make a good investment.

For the most part, the top drafting teams are there because they need QB's; however, the defensive stars are considered to be more of a sure thing than the top QB's. I have regularly seen mocks with Houston taking Clowney and Jacksonville with Mack.

If they do so, the expectation is taking the best available at the top of the 2nd. There is a strong possibility Carr may still be available at the end of the 1st; if not Carr, Mettenberger, whose recent work-out elevated him in the mind of Jaws as the #2 QB in the draft.

I see this as a calculated gamble - draft that QB at #28 and start the auction. If we lose the gamble, we get an excellent back-up on rookie pay-scale, a little pressure on Cam (or his possible successor if things go really sour), and/or future trade bait. If we win, we pick up an additional 2015 1st at the cost of dropping 5-7 places in 2014 {plus anything else Gettleman can milk out of the deal}.

Of course, this might not work out. As a point of curiosity, does anyone recall who drafted Eli Manning? Hint - it wasn't the Giants!
