2014 NFL Draft: Tuesday Afternoon Prospect

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Let's head to the deep South to see who's on T.A.P. today.

Forty Yard Dash Vertical Broad Jump
4.77 28.5" 9' 2"

What do you see when you look at the chart above? I'm certain that most of you would tell me the information provided is incomplete, and I agree. It would be both fruitless and unfair to make a judgement based on these numbers alone. It only makes sense that one must know the size and position of the player attached to the metrics before opining.

What if I told you that they belong to a defensive tackle? In that case, the numbers suddenly jump off the page, especially the forty yard dash. But what if I told you they were connected to a wide receiver? Now were talking about a completely different impression, right? Truth be told, a wide receiver did indeed post these unfavorable measurements at the combine. His name is Jarvis Landry and you should get to know him better despite his dubious showing at the 2014 NFL Combine.

Speaking of numbers, here are some that are more encouraging:

As a whole, this is very impressive data, especially considering they were accomplished with pedestrian speed in the super athletic defense heavy SEC. The metric that stands out the most is Landry's first down catch ratio. 79.2 percent of his catches resulted in a new set of downs. Both he and his colleague, Odell Beckham Jr(79.6), were among the nation's leaders in this important category.

It's certainly true that Landry won't be blowing the top off NFL coverage any time soon. But what he lacks in speed and explosion, he makes up for in precise route running. He doesn't possess the type of agility necessary to consistently gain separation, but he does understand how to use his advanced knowledge and execution of the route tree to produce at the highest level. Additionally, Landry is a gifted natural hands catcher, who uses his extremely strong 10 1/4-inch mitts to snatch any and every ball that comes within his vicinity. Not only does he have the hands and route running ability to succeed at the next level, but he also is a very capable blocker.

In my latest mock draft, I have the Carolina Panthers taking Landry in the 2nd round. I realize that some of you may have an issue with selecting the former Tiger this early. Truth be told, I'm experiencing a similar trepidation as well. Drafting a possession receiver so early doesn't seem to be such a good idea on the surface, but Landry has the game speed and intangibles to do more than survive. Let me put it this way. When a receiver doubles his receiving yards and touchdown output from one season to the next in the SEC, there's reason to believe he'll successfully find his niche at the next level. Here's to hoping he does so in the blue and black.

What about you CSR? Be sure to let everyone know how you feel about Landry and my latest mock draft.
