As we have all heard, our beloved sea creature has just signed his franchise tender, for 13.1 million dollars. Woah, wait a minute, we were just reported with 20 million not to long ago. Hmmm, let's think that through. OH YEAH, that leaves us with: 6.9 (don't you laugh you pervert) million dollars in cap. That kinda money is money strapped, and i do believe remembering mr Dave Gettleman continuously say we are "Cap Strapped". How the He Double Hockey sticks is giving a player 13.1 million dollars guaranteed getting us out of that situation? He said to be prepared for 2016 off-season, because that is when we will be in the clear. Please, let's dive into this further...
Alrighty, first things first, we are gonna need to figure out why exactly we tagged hardy. I scowered his twitter trying to find any reference to the signing. Well, all of you guys might as well forget about trading the Kraken, or losing him. Here is his twitter, he is celebrating to come back to be a Panther. Hardy's Twitter. So, that only leaves 1 more question. Who are we losing for him? Well, i have a few (heartbreaking) Candidates.
Steve Smith- Before you bash me on it, it WILL NOT BE THIS OFF-SEASON. If we cut Steve this off-season it will cost 2 million dollars against the cap to cut him. And he already said that his jersey THIS SEASON will say "Steve Smith Sr." Meaning that his new jersey has already been stitched and ready to go. HOWEVER, this is Steve's last year as a Panther, so prepare for heartbreak and anger. Now, there is a tiny chance that Steve is restructured, but for what? He is aging, has a family, and his body has taken it's toll of shots.
Charles Godfrey- Like it or not, this is a huge win-win situation. if we post June1st cut him, we save a whopping 6 million dollars towards the cap. considering we went 12-4 without him, he is good as gone.
Chase Blackburn- Cutting him saves us about 905,000 dollars towards the cap. Considering Klein is behind him, this would be a no brainer cut.
Kealoha Pilares- Saves us 600,000 dollars towards the cap
With those cuts we save about 7.7 million towards the cap, so 6.9 goes to 14.6 million. Let's throw in a few restructures, and say C.J restructures, and Olson restructures. Say that saves 6 million toward the cap. Great, now that takes us back to 20.6 million on the cap. A few cuts and restructers that keep this team together, give us room for some upgrades in FA, and Hardy stays, while more than likely, scoring a long term deal to keep this franchise together.
It isn't as foolish as you think it is to leave Hardy Tagged through this year after a few roster changes.
