What's Golden Just Might Glitter

Would the Panthers be interested in this particular receiver?

Hi there, I'm from Field Gulls, and I couldn't help but notice that Cam Newton needed to throw TO someone. There might be a solution to that problem that people aren't really aware of, and that could be Golden Tate, the WR about to hit free agency from the Seattle Seahawks.

Now I'm not about to say that he's a perfect receiver, he's a little inconsistent, he's had his lapses in concentration, and he's not the fastest, but he's got the best balance of any receiver in the NFL (with the possible exception of his current teammate, Percy Harvin), and that's not an exaggeration, he's got great lower body strength, his hands are some of the best in the league, and his vision after the catch is exceptional.

I don't want to lose him. He plays really well when he's on (especially against the Rams for some reason...) and there are lots of different facets to his game.

Screens: These might be his favorites. Tate is a former running back who was converted to wide receiver in college, so he's great at setting up blocks in the open field, and when he gets there he's really tough to tackle. He's played in the NFC West his whole career, and this makes the fact that he leads the league in forced missed tackles (outside of running backs) since he was drafted, despite not playing most of his first season AND playing in a run heavy offense. But you see lots of things like this: (0:14)

Short passes: This turns into basically the same thing as screens, get him the ball in open spaces and he'll make stuff happen. This was actually one of my favorite plays of the season, as it shows everything Tate does after the catch: (1:06)

Now, one thing Tate doesn't really do that much, either by design or by actual limitations of his play, is intermediate passes. This could just be the Seahawks' offensive strategy though, since they focus so much on the big play, which is mostly generated in that system by throwing deep passes, and short passes/screens, at least when throwing the ball. But one thing Tate does well is adjust to the...

Deep Ball: A staple of the Seahawks' offense, Wilson threw the ball farther per pass than all but two QBs this past year. Here's an interesting thought, Andrew Luck, who, by all accounts, has to do much more than Wilson, only threw the ball 4 yards farther over the course of the entire season, despite throwing more than 100 passes more than Wilson did, but enough of me ranting, here's Tate's ball skills: (2:18)

So what do you think CSR? Would Tate fit on the Panthers? He's not the biggest, fastest, or strongest player out there, but he's really good at what he does.

Oh and he returns punts too: (5:04)

So what do you think Pat's Pulpit? Would Tate fit on the Patriots? He's not the biggest, fastest, or strongest player out there, but he's really good at what he does.

Oh and he returns punts too: (5:04)
