Curious Case of the WR position in 2014 ? Could it been taking shape in Week Two of Free Agency?

Here we go again !

Many have heard the reports on several WR's lately but almost zero being rumor to at least be coming the Panthers way. Until now according to multiple media outlets the Panthers will host 32 year old NC-State Alum J. Cotchery formerly of the Jets and Steelers on Monday 3-17-2014. Cotchery is strictly a slot receiver and could be what R. Proehl was for us for several seasons. Make no mistake Cotchery is not being consider for a #1 or #2 WR role on the depth chart AT ALL. I expect Gettleman to try an get him on the cheap sense the only other team wanting him back is the Steelers who believe it or not are in a worse cap mess then we are. However, Cotchery is coming off his best season to date registering 602 yards receiving, 10 TD and one 100+ yard game a season ago. Cotchery is needed for the slot, amd we need a veteran to lead our young group of soon to be drafted WR's because even with Cotchery & perhaps Jones we will have a lot of youth at that postion next season regardless of who we sign.

Secondly, we are still rumored to be looking at J. Jones of the Green Packers and the feeling is mutual. Currently their has been no serious interest in from other teams expect for us. Jones who remains the best WR on the free agent market. I expect Gettleman to keep working his cap magic as he tries to go shopping in the bargain bin at Dollar General with quarters in his pocket instead of dollar bills thanks to our former GM handing out money like it was water a few seasons ago. Jones went on record saying that he would love to play with Cam and listed him and him alone. At only 29 years old and being literally buried on the depth chart in Green Bay this guy is a total pro, does all the right things, and has literally no ego. Before getting hurt this past season Jones came off a 784 yard, 14 TD season.

Almost fan, reporter or player that has played or worked with him has great things to say and how great he is in the community and more. Is it a lack of market or is it a real want to play here in Carolina , I honestly cannot tell even with all the positive reports and comments I have read about the guy. This signing makes a lot of sense but as the link states are cap situation Jones could still be out of our price range due to the likes of the RB's, Godfrey's contract, Hardy's franchise tag etc...something has to give to allow us some cap space such as another restructured contract or locking up Hardy long term to reduce his 13.1 million dollar cap hit.

Personally if Gettleman could nab two veterans like this I would be happy considering what is left available on the open market. However I find it curious how we just wouldn't go after a J. Ford to play in the slot and handle the KR/PR duties as well, however maybe Ford thinks he is really worth more then any team is willing to pay. I guess we are holding out for that until the draft or handing those jobs to K. Barner & another draft pick. My question is the combo of Jones and Cotchery even enough ? On paper it could be but the game is not played on paper is it. Really I know G-man is working with several players at the moment an like a previous post stated now that the high dollar craziness of throwing money around at players like water (Foxy's Bronco's) now we can all come down to Earth an get back to realistic contract dealings within the NFL. Remember good teams almost never break the bank in free agency because they don't have to.
