NFL free agency 2014: Brandon LaFell signs with Patriots

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Another day, another lost starter.

The New England Patriots have signed wide receiver Brandon LaFell to a three year deal, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

LaFell was selected in the third round of the 2010 draft and quickly became a much reviled figure among Panthers fans. He never supplied the statistics people craved, despite being the third receiving option behind Steve Smith and Greg Olsen. Now he will be another weapon for Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, and it will be fascinating to see where he ends up on the depth chart of a team with an elite passing offense.

The Panthers were reported to be interested in bringing LaFell back, but weren't going to make any moves in the first week of free agency. This could reap dividends by finding players on the cheap, but when it comes to retaining talent you need to work quickly -- Carolina didn't.

We already knew the Panthers would look very different in 2014, but the offense will be all new. Now it's about waiting and seeing if it pays off.
