It's going to be interesting to see how Smith handles this transition considering he has a legacy in Carolina he hopefully wants to leave in tact.
Steve Smith's deal in Baltimore could actually reach $11M as a max value if an option bonus is exercised— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 14, 2014
That is not counting the $5M the Panthers owe him. I'm having seller's remorse on this one guys. It seemed like a good idea at first but now I'm wondering if management should not have tried harder to see if Smith would actually tow the line in whatever manner it was they wanted.
I also wonder here Jerry Richardson was in this whole decision. Who actually signed off on this move besides Gettleman? Rivera? JR? I assume 'yes' for all three but it might have been Getts call completely.
In the end if the Panthers have another good season it won;t be questioned. Yet if Smith puts up big numbers in Baltimore while the Panthers offense flounders then we might question that Smith was actually right. Maybe Mike Shula doesn't have what it takes to make in in the NFL. It did work last season enough to go 12-4. Anything less in 2014 is sure to raise questions.
