Mike Mitchell announced on Twitter today that he has signed a new contract with one of the league's most historic franchises, the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Pittsburgh!!!!!! First I have to thank God for this blessing and Mr. Rooney and the Steelers organization for such a great opportunity!", Mitchell tweeted to his followers earlier today.
In the Steel City, Mitchell will be paired with Troy Polamalu in a massively overhauled Steeler defense. It will be the first time in 9 years that the Steelers starting safety rotation has been shaken up... Except, you know, around game 5 every season when Polamalu hits IR and someone steps in for him.
Fun fact: Former Pittsburgh starting safety Ryan Clark has a rare blood disorder that keeps him from playing when the team travels to Denver, due to the high altitude and thinner air. Considering the path to the Super Bowl will likely pass through Denver again this year, maybe the Steelers higher-ups wanted a starter they could count on to be able to play in that situation... Pure speculation, but it makes sense to me!
