Johnn Manziel: This Year's Cam Newton

Hello all, I decided to take a break from reading about all the what is Carolina going to do this offseason and talk about one of the hot topics in this upcoming NFL draft, Johnny "Football" Manziel. Now first off obviously Johnny Manziel doesn't have the size or arm strength of Cam but he has seemed to draw the same if not more buzz. If anyone remembers the dark days(2011) on this site, it was civil war. All you had to do to was mention Cam's resume (good and bad) soon after an immediate fire storm would start in the comments. It wasn't just on this website either it was all over, from Gil Brandt saying he's going to be one of the best qb's to Nolan Nawrocki's infamous slander piece on everything from his character to his style of play. Luckily for Johnny this time around Nolan is keeping it pretty mum on the scouting reports.

Coming into this years draft, it seems Johnny Manziel is in the same boat as Cam. He's easily the most talked about player other than Jadeveon Clowney. Everything from is height to his last offseason has been under a microscope. The question is still there though how good will this kid be? One of the things that gets over looked is his leadership. Ask some people they'll tell you he doesn't have any but I simply can't believe that a QB at any level has zero leadership. Looking back at his last game he was on the sideline trying to cool off Mike Evans. He managed to lead his team back from that game and eventually win over Duke. The situation is somewhat similar to Cam's game against Alabama, be down 24-7 at half to come roaring back to make it the national championship game.

Another is the experience the two have. With Cam only have one full year of collegiate football completed he managed to win a National Championship and a Heisman. By the end of the season everyone knew who Cam Newton was. Johnny skyrocketed in similar fashion managing to become the first freshman to win the Heisman. Although he didn't manage to win a nation title, Mr. Football was on everyone's radar. After only his second season Johnny Manziel declared for the NFL draft.

The biggest concerns between the two where their character and maturity issues. We all know Cam just wanted to be an "icon and entertainer" with his disingenuous smile. He was being touted as the next Vince Young or Jamarcus Russell and according some was a sure fire bust before his first snap in training camp. While Manziel isn't being considered to that extent yet his line of doubters are just as long. Both had their NCAA troubles, Cam with his pay for play and Johnny's cash for autographs scandal. These accusations were later dropped but again people will always speculate. On top of all this nothing has been more criticized than their character. Everyone thought Newton just wanted a pay day after an amazing season at Auburn (hence the Jamarcus Russel comparison). Just about everything Johnny has done in the last year and a half has been on TV. From leaving the Manning Camp early to hanging out with stars like Lebron and Drake. Manziel was living and partying like a rockstar (Also on his 21st b-day celebrated at MGM's megaclub Hakkasaan in Las Vegas).

In the end if there was one this Johnny Manziel should take away from Cam is his approach. Forget everything in the past and move forward. Your past doesn't define you but your current actions do. On draft day " With the (insert pick with team) selects Johnny Manziel Quartback Texas A&M" will be called. I'm sure some fans will dread and others will rejoice. Some won't want to watch their team because that would mean hoping Manziel succeeds. In the end though after a few days maybe weeks when we get closer to preseason those fans that turned off will tune in. The ones hoping for his failure will watch for better or worse and will cheer him on much to the same we did with Cam week one.
