Super Bowl Flashback: Panthers vs. Patriots

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

It was 10 years ago today yesterday the Panthers played in their only Super Bowl, a 32-29 loss to the Patriots. Let's take a look at the game and their road getting there.

The Panthers entered the playoffs as a wildcard and quickly dispatched the Cowboys 29-10 behind big games from their three stars on offense: RB Stephen Davis (26 car for 104 yds, TD), WR Steve Smith ((135 yds, TD) and Muhsin Muhammad (103 yds). Jake Delhomme threw for 273 yds and a TD. On defense it was the front seven leading the way with Will Witherspoon and Dan Morgan leading in tackles and Kris Jenkins and Al Wallace getting sacks.

In the quarterfinals the Panthers gave us arguably the most exciting victory in Panther franchise history, a 29-23 overtime victory over the Rams. The defense picked off Mark Bulger three times in this game as Steve smith shined again, posting 163 receiving yards and the winning score, the now famous X-Clown play he took for 69 yards and the winning score. If I was going to watch a replay of a game in the past it would be this one. It was amazing but it's best to watch it happen:

In the conference final the Panthers beat the Eagles in a defensive struggle 14-3 where the Eagles offense could do nothing against the Panthers front seven. While neither QB could muster much in this game the Panthers ran the ball well enough for Delhomme to hit Muhammad for a TD while DeShaun Foster scored late to put the Eagles away.

So now we get to the Super Bowl. We all know how it ends, a 32-29 Panther loss. But it still warms my heart to see how well we played and how close we came. Rather than me try to describe it here's a nice recap video:

Keep Pounding on this Super Bowl Sunday Panther fans. We will return to the glory land soon, I can feel it.
