49ers vs Panthers injury report: Wednesday update

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Are you ready for a surprise?

The Carolina Panthers practiced officially for the first time in two weeks on Wednesday and we had a chance to see if Steve Smith would practice.

There's good news on that front, with No. 89 working on a limited basis. It seems that his prediction of playing is on pace to come true. There was no chance Smith would miss a playoff game unless an injury was too severe for him to walk, but it will be more encouraging (and relieving) if his status improves over the course of the week.

Now for the surprise, I didn't forget about that one.

Jonathan Stewart was a full participant on Wednesday, meaning he's almost assuredly playing on Sunday. It's a rapid turnaround from his MCL sprain and gives the Panthers offense a new look they've lacked over the last few weeks. It's impossible to know how many touches Stewart will get, but it's unquestionable that the offense is better when the team has access to Stewart.

Here's the full injury report:

Position Player Injury Participation
DT Colin Cole Calf Limited
WR Steve Smith Knee Limited
TE Ben Hartsock Knee Full
S Quintin Mikell Thumb Full
RB Jonathan Stewart Knee Full
