First off I'm going to put CB third on the priority list and here's why. What doomed the season to end prematurely was the offenses ineffectiveness in critical times down the stretch. So the focus should be on the offense, not the defense. While I agree we need to upgrade the talent at CB we have enough working pieces to win 12 games again.
Offensive line and wide receiver on the other hand need immediate help. The Panthers glaring failure to punch the ball in on 4th and goal has to be mote stuck in Rivera's eye yet today. Hence I think OL, specifically RG and RT should be the offseason priority; 'Hog Mollies' in Gettleman speak. The Panthers absolutely cannot exit the offseason without fresh new, more talented bodies at these two positions. To not do so would be a football crime.
Improvement in the OL would help the wide receiver position. Though I wouldn't be crazy about coming back with the same group I could pin my hopes on Smitty having one last hurrah year and go for 1,200 and 12. WR does not a talent upgrade and of course a future #1 receiver to replace Smitty. But even Megatron can't catch the pass that ins't thrown because the QB is being hurried. So that's why I have WR at #2 in priority.
Now let me define 'priority'. I've always believed you address your weaknesses using both free agency and the draft, with the draft a plan B that may not happen depending on the quality of the draft and how it unfolds. So you need to make changes via free agency first. Teams that wait until the draft tend to make hasty, ill advised decisions and as a result have a bad draft.
Obviously the salary cap keeps the Panthers from addressing all of their needs via free agency, hence the need to prioritize. So here is how I'm going to lay out the poll. Which position of the three do we give priority too in free agency and which positions do we wait and give priority in the draft?
