Panthers Poised for Breakout Fantasy Seasons

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

The CSR fantasy football season is about to kick off so which Panther players are poised for breakouts in 2013? Let's take a look.

First be sure to list those who are beyond breakout seasons, meaning those who have already broken out and therefore have some fantasy relevance in 2013.

QB Cam Newton

While many people are predicting Newton to put up fewer points than his first two season but I am not one of the them. The Panther defense is obviously much improved which will put the ball back into Newton's more often. Add in the fact Newton is making fewer mistakes with the ball which will also give him more chances to score. For these reasons I think Newton will exceed his previous fantasy totals.

Projection: 4,200 yards passing, 24 passing TDs, 650 yards rushing with 7 TDs

RB DeAngelo Williams

With RB Jonathan Stewart's status up in the air Williams stands to get a lot of carries, the level of carries we've seen make a #1 RB. So I think in most draft's Williams could be a value pick and a nice play early in the season if Stewart doesn't play. The only hurdle might be the state of the offensive line, which isn't opening holes for the running game.

Projection: 1,050 yards rushing, 6 TDs

WR. Steve Smith

Smith is poised for a nice fantasy season as Newton's main target. At 34 he hasn't lost a step and the Panthers really have not added any real competition as Newton's number one target. If Newton's scoring goes up then Smith should benefit from that.

Projection: 1,250 yards receiving with 6 TDs

So that is the common wisdom of Panthers worth drafting in 2013. Here's two more plays poised for break outs in 2013:

TE Greg Olsen

Olsen had a career season in 2012 but will exceed those numbers in 2013 making him a viable fantasy TE. The Panthers and QB Cam Newton look to Olsen more and more as he is Newton's 'safety value' so to speak when under duress. The Panthers are running more passing plays in his direction as well.

Projection: 900 yards receiving and 6 TDs

Panthers Defense /Special Teams

As we have seen in the preseason the Panther defense is creating turnovers in buckets and I don't think it is a fluke. Add in Ted Ginn to the return game and his ability to break it long and the Panther defense is suddenly a very good play. With the addition of the two DTs up front in Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short will pressure the QB and bottle up the running game. That all portends a very good fantasy defense.

Projection: 44 sacks, 16 INTs, 12 FF, 8 TDs, 380 PAs
