Charlotte Observer is at it again Panther Nation !!!
Really this is to early with the biggest Preseason game looming this Thursday night but oh well.
On the roster: Cam Newton, Derek Anderson, Jimmy Clausen
Off: Colby Cameron
Clausen has had a great preseason and is pushing Anderson for the backup spot. The Panthers could potentially go with two quarterbacks, but more than likely will keep three.
Running backs (5)
Off: Tauren Poole, Mike Zordich (injured)
Stewart, recovering from ankle surgery, has yet to do much running and looks like he’ll start the season on the physically unable to perform list. Poole is a tough, physical runner, but Smith has more value as a special teams player.
Hixon has fallen on the depth chart while nursing a hamstring injury, but it’s hard to see Gettleman cutting the former New Yor Giants’ receiver. Adams’ best shot to make the team is as a punt returner, but he has been sidelined by a calf strain.
Tight ends (3)
Williams, a former small college basketball player, has brought an extra dimension to the Panthers’ passing game. Olsen remains one of the best receiving tight ends in the league.
Offensive linemen (8)
Look for Gettleman to bring in a veteran lineman at the end of the month to fortify the team’s thinnest position. It figures to be someone who can play guard and tackle – like Travelle Wharton.
Defensive linemen (9)
On: DE Charles Johnson, DE Greg Hardy, DT Dwan Edwards, DT Star Lotulelei, DT Kawann Short, DE Frank Alexander, DE Mario Addison, DT Colin Cole, DT Frank Kearse
If Fua and receiver Pilares get cut, Newton will be the only remaining member of the Panthers’ 2011 draft class. Horton and Nzegwu have been productive; one of them could take the roster spot of Kearse, who’s been hurt.
Beason, coming off microfracture knee surgery, hopes to be ready for Week 1 vs. Seattle, even if he has to manage his pain. The signing of Blackburn is one of Gettleman’s best offseason moves.
Defensive backs (9)
Campbell, Nakamura and Jones are fighting for the last one or two safety spots. Jones and Nakamura have an edge because of their special teams experience, although Campbell is not out of the running.
Gano has been long and accurate throughout training camp and the two exhibitions. Nortman wants to be more consistent in his second season.
For me it is simple I would replace FB/TE Brockel's spot with CB Eric Dockery (who is supposed to be banged up), I would keep A. Russell (SS) on the final 53 man roster and dump C. Jones (SS)would has been terrible all preseason. Also no way the Campbell is going to cut AT ALL Charlotte Observer we are thin as far as depth goes at safety already and he is the backup SS for Mitchell and plays good in pass coverage. It pains me but Nakamura will make the team as a backup FS and because R.Lester hasn't progressed as quickly as we all would have hoped at either safety spot and we have nobody else and R. Silva is nothing great and an easy cut.
We are all hopeful Kugbila can play but cutting C. Scott is risky and Gettleman loves his Hog Mollies so who knows how the reserve guard spot is going to go because Byers is a good backup "C" but as a guard he struggles some. If Kugbila cannot make it back we may have to keep Scott. The article ties S. Locklear to us because of his ties to Gettleman I personally don't believe that because the Giants are also keep close tabs on Locklear to gauge how his knee heals and he will resign their first if given a chance I have a feeling. All comes down to health of Kugbila and who we will sign to take Campbell's spot who is going to IR.
I hate the idea of keeping A. Smith over T. Poole who could fill in for J. Stewart for the first six or so games. M. Tolbert has also been banged up so I would look for Stewart to start the year on the PUP list and T. Poole get a shot to stick on the final 53 man roster to start the year. A. Smith goes back to the PS squad because we already have a better scatback in K. Barner who will also make the final 53.
I don't mind the cuts of Fua, but I do mind keeping Kearse who is banged up; Kearse vs Fua is really a wash an neither are anything great. Kearse has looked pretty bad in the preseason but can play the UT & NT's positiosn in a bind and Fua is a NT and nothing more. C. Cole will make the team as a backup NT so I guess you have to give Kearse the edge if healthy but I really don't like the idea. M. Addison hasn't been great in the preseason but he has been in the reg season for us last year so he just beats out Nzegwu for the final backup DE spot but I would expect Nzegwu to land on the PS squad shortly after the final roster cuts.
