Panther Paw Prints: Preseason Game 2 Edition

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Here are some Panther links from around the web on the Panthers 14-9 loss to the Eagles in game 2 of the preseason.

The best news is that the Panthers suffered no serious injuries with LB Chase Blackburn the only player getting dinged:

CAROLINA PANTHERS Linebacker Chase Blackburn had to leave Thursday night’s game with a back injury. After the game, Blackburn said he had a back spasm and that he should be all right in a day or two.

Hopefully Chase is back on the field by Tuesday.

If you haven't seen this rediculous INT by Josh Norman the final day of TC it's worth your time:

Inside the Panthers: Video: Josh Norman makes ridiculous one-handed interception
On Tuesday, the Panthers final day of training camp in Spartanburg, cornerback Josh Norman made a great one-handed interception on a pass intended for James Shaw during red zone drills. (Also, check out Mike Mitchell run to Norman to congratulate him on the pick.)

Rivera thinks the Eagles play action hindered the Panthers pass rush:

Eagles 14, Panthers 9
"We probably overplayed the play action," Rivera said. "It's all part of it. It stymies your pass rush. You can't allow that play action to stymie you doing your assignment. We started watching the mesh point a little too much in my opinion. I really thought it froze us a little too much."

WR David Gettis arguably had the best game of any Panther Thursday:

Gettis was the standout of the half, finishing with a game-high five catches for 82 yards. "I'm very excited for David," Rivera said. "He stepped up today and played a very good football game. I told the players, I thought it was a very inspirational effort he gave. "He's putting pressure on a lot of guys. David is doing the things that he showed earlier in his career. I'm very happy for him."

I think we can pencil Gettis onto the 53 man roster. Wow, what a turnaround for the 4th year WR.

Sloppy preseason can equal sloppy start to the season, at least that's my theory. Rivera seems to understand:

Preseason perfect time to learn from loss
Head coach Ron Rivera said it all comes down to taking care of the details, always a challenge in mid-August with all the moving parts in play. The Panthers have time on their side. "There are a lot of little details that we messed up on," Rivera said. "Listening to the coaches on the headsets talking about somebody being out of position, somebody not running the right route, somebody missing a block, somebody out of alignment - there are some issues we need to get corrected, and we will get them corrected.

"I am very pleased with a lot of things that did go on. I'm just disappointed because we had opportunities to put more points on the board."

0-2 in the red zone makes for a long day

RB DeAngelo Williams saw extended action and he played well:

Carolina Panthers ride DeAngelo Williams for 12 carries in preseason contest |
Those 12 carries are the most in a game by any Panthers back in the first two preseason contests. By comparison, Williams played in 12 games last year in which he did not get at least 12 carries.

"Maybe a couple less, but for the most part he ran hard, he did some nice things and picked up some good yardage for us," Ron Rivera said.

I think if he had stayed in the game he would have broken at least one.
