How many sacks will Star and Short add to this team? We had 39 sacks last year. Star will draw double teams. Consistently. That is going to leave our ends and UT one on one with the rest of the line. A favorable situation for any of our MonStrz. So what does that mean at the end of the year? How many more sacks will that equal out to? 10? Can we say Hardy and Johnson will definitely get one a game now? Can we say that at least one of our DE's will have multiple sacks every week? 16 to 24+ a piece? Is 32 combined sacks setting the bar too low for The Kraken and Loch ness? Don't forget about Frank Alexander. He should get at least a handful, right? Applewhite, Keiser, and Addison added another 2.5 collectively.
How about the DT's themselves? We all know Dwan Edwards racked up 6 sacks last year. Do we expect a repeat performance? Give or take a couple? Ron Edwards and Frank Kearse were able to reach the QB once each last year. Neblett attributed .5 to bring the '12 DT's total to 8.5. Will Star Lotulelei reach the QB more often than our NT's of late? I believe he will. Surely he can get 4. Short was hailed as the best pass rushing DT in the draft by G-Man. Will he contribute this year? Is he an upgrade over Dwan Edwards? I don't know if I expect either of them to reach 6 sacks this year. How many should they combine for though? 8-10 doesn't seem far fetched.
What about the LB's? They should get one at least every couple of games. We've had a lot of blitzing from the secondary throughout TC as well. You would figure we'd have success with that every once in a while. How many will the back 7 get? We only managed one from the unit in 2012.
The Kraken plans on getting 3 and change a game. Will the truth be in the middle of that one? 25 for #76? That would be anywhere from 14 - 39 more sacks than he had last year. For the sake of this poll, lets pretend Hardy never announced his goal for 50 sacks. It's not that I don't believe that he can do it, but this isn't about his goal. It's about the impact Star and Short will have on this team. So before you vote, pretty please, forget about the 50 sack goal.
In 2012 we finished with 39 sacks as a team. Denver and St. Louis had the most in the league with 52. We'd only need 13 more sacks to match that. Which is a damn good 3.25 sacks per game.
Can Johnson and Hardy get 16 a piece? Can their depth add 3 more sacks than they managed in 2012? Will Star, Dwan, Short, and the rest of the DT's bring the QB down 14 times? That's only 5.5 more sacks than the less talented 2012 interior DL. Can the LB's and DB's make their way to the QB at all? Combined they should get at least 4. None of this sounds unattainable. That would put us at 58 for the year. That would be outstanding, but how likely is it?
