Let me start off by saying that is a very unlikely scenario, but there is nothing else going on right now so why not give it some thought? The Bills have until July 15th to come to an agreement on an extension with Jarius Byrd. They are still not close in talks and it is looking like he will want to play elsewhere, possibly as soon as this season if he does agree to sign his tender for a trade.
We have Charles Godfrey under contract though 2016. In 2014 and 2015, Godfrey will have a $5 million base salary for each season. In 2016, his salary rises to $5.5 million. Godfrey will most likely have to restructure in order to stay with us, if he continues to play like he has since he signed the contract extension. Byrd seems to be seeking a contract roughly around $40 million. With the cap number that Godfrey will bring to the table, why not use him as a foundation of a trade for Byrd? Byrd will seek maybe $2-3m more than what we were already going to pay Godfrey. Byrd is only 26 years-old and already regarded as a top-5 safety. So what would be the chances of us landing a trade with them by sending Godfrey and another player or pick? Probably not very high but it's a nice thought to entertain. I see Charles Godfrey and a 4th round pick possibly a 3rd being able to land Byrd. I know the cap room is tight and everyone wants to re-sign Greg Hardy but we need an elite player in the secondary. Byrd had nine interceptions in is rookie campaign. He has not reached that total since but he is a very consistent player and is the definition of a ballhawk. He is the kind of player we need in our secondary. Acquiring him in a trade and signing Mikell for cheap would all but make the Panthers have an elite defense. Getting Byrd could very well move our defense into the top 3, maybe even the top defense. So how about it?
