2010 was the worst season for panthers fans across the globe in a very long time. Jimmy Clausen was at QB, John Fox was a dead man walking, Steve Smith was lashing out and players were under performing. During 2010 the only bright spot was the production of David Gettis and the pure speed that he showed. Jimmy Clausen's numbers were so bad they have to be put into consideration when talking about David Gettis and his rookie year.
In 2010 Jimmy Clausen only completed 157 passes for 3 tds, 9 ints, 1557 tds and 8 fumbles all to lead to a beautiful 58.4 rating. Steve Smith only had 46 catches for 554 yards and only 2 TD's. People also need to realize that even though the numbers were somewhat similar Lafell was in Gettis shadow that entire season because of Gettis and his big play ability! Gettis on 10 less targets than Lafell managed 37 catches for 508 yards and 3 TD's. Lafell had 38 catches, 464 yards, and only 1 td. Lafell and Smith each had 10 more targets than Gettis, and Gettis still managed the more yards than lafell, and more td's than both. Why? Because of big play ability he managed an 88 yard td with St Pierre throwing the ball! Watch that play the coverage wasn't blown Gettis flew past the defenders of the Ravens.
Now lets look at 2011, we draft Cam Newton... Newton completes 310 passes for over 4,000 yards and 20 tds, and Steve Smiths production triples! Mean while Lafell still sticks in the mud, and can't provide consistency. If Gettis were to have played in 2011 his size and speed, and big play ability that he even showed flashes of in a fox ran offense with St Pierre, Clausen, and Moore at QB he would have doubled his stats in that chud down field big play offense, and talk of drafting a wr wouldn't even have been mentioned.
