Happy Memorial Day.
Well folks, it’s that time again. Time for your question for the weekend.
First, I would like to make a correction from last weeks’ question (well, my answer at least). If you recall I wanted to replace Dwan Edwards with Mike Ruckers at the DT position. Several people (and I do mean several people) set me straight by reminding me that Ruckers was a DE, and not a DT. So with that I will change my answer from Ruckers to Brentson Buckner. Same reason, just a different name.
Now that I have ate my crow pie, I chose a deep question in hopes that it will last for three days (hint, hint). So let’s get started. The question this week is;
What is the single biggest mistake the Panthers have made since being established?
Muhsin "Moose" Muhammad
Let me tell you why. Following the 2004 season, Muhammad, who was due a $10 million roster bonus, could not come to contract terms with Panthers, and was released in February 2005. Hours after his release, Muhammad received a call from the Chicago Bears, who offered the 32-year old veteran a six year contract. Muhammad agreed, and left Charlotte for Chicago. Now, in my opinion , I think the Panthers got cocky and assume that with Steve Smith here, and the fact that Moose was 32 years old that all they have to do is find a new WR to replace Moose and their WR core would be set for years to come. Well, they was half right, Steve Smith became the wideout we thought he would become. Problem is IT'S BEEN 8 FREAKING YEARS AND WE STILL DON'T HAVE A #2 WR, (sigh, sorry, sorry, didn't mean to yell). Yeah, I know he came back, but it just wasn't the same. The years we could have had with them two were wasted.
The fact is, we have had a bunch of "woulda, coulda, shoulda, but for not" wide receivers who has come and gone and never got close to taking pressure off Smitty like Muhammad. So, I chose this as the biggest mistake the Panthers have ever done because we are still feeling the effects of it today.
