He wasn't talking about our own Jimmy Clausen. He wasn't talking about his former QB Jake Delhomme though we do know he wasn't a big fan of Delhomme's passing ability. As it turns out he was talking mark Sanchez, a QB he has never played with. I found his comments quite curious:
Steve Smith of Panthers rips Mark Sanchez: 'He sucks' - NFL.com
"He sucks," Smith reportedly said Wednesday on WFNZ. The receiver went on to add, via the Sporting News and ProFootballTalk.com, "I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper bag sandwich."
It's an out-of-left-field insult from a guy who's never played a snap with Sanchez. Is it a fair shot for Smith to take? Smith has seen his share of bad quarterbacks in Carolina -- and Sanchez, admittedly, exhibits some of those traits -- but picking apart the Jets passer is easy sport here in May. Too easy.
'Throw me a paper bag sandwich'? Err...does he mean throw me a sandwich in a paper bag? We get the point though I'm chuckling more at Smitty's mangling the analogy. One of my biggest and growing wishes is for Smith to go into radio after he is done with football because he pretty darn funny and obviously isn't afraid to say what he thinks. I didn't listen tot he whole interview so I'm not sure what led to the comment but Sanchez is an easy target.
To Sanchez's credit he took the high road in his response:
UPDATE: Sanchez responded Thursday. USA Today's Mike Garafolo reported the quarterback said of Smith: "I wish him and his team a healthy, successful season."
I mean what else is he going to say? It's not like Sanchez wants any part of the NFLs toughest WR! I think we may have just added a new one to the NFL's Rules & Regulations:
