The turnover in the UDFA signings is the most noticeable shift this year under Dave Gettleman. In the past these players would at least make it to Spartanburg and have a chance to compete -- but this year players are barely making it out of the first weekend. Joining the list of cuts today are tight end Taylor Cook, and wide receiver Trey Diller.
Cutting two of the UDFA signings is an indication that they like some of their walk-on players. Taylor Cook had an opportunity to compete at a thin TE spot, but the team will likely look to free agency to find a veteran option. Alternatively, it could be a sign that the Panthers like what they see from Brandon Williams, the other UDFA tight end they signed.
Diller had a few camp invites, including the local Houston Texans, but ultimately signed in Carolina. Thinning out the wide receiver spot now will streamline the selections that need to be made in Spartanburg.
