It's under three weeks until the NFL draft! What are you most excited about? Is it the players the Panthers will get, maybe it's a chance to see your favorite college players in the NFL -- or, like me, you'll be excited when all the arguing is over. Whatever the reason, the draft is right around the corner, and Matthew Fairburn did a three round mock draft that has Carolina going a common route -- WR and DT.
The players are different though, and it's hard to really have a problem with these two players given where they're picked.
14. Carolina Panthers: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
If Cam Newton is going to thrive, the Panthers need to continue to surround him with weapons. Steve Smith isn't getting younger, so Carolina would be well served to add some youth at the position. No receiver in this draft brings the upside to the position that Patterson does. A lot of people have been clamoring for a defensive tackle here, but we all did the same thing last year, and look how that turned out.
Patterson has been talked about ad naseum. Taking him would be a risk, but the payoff could be great. While Tavon Austin may be the most electric playmaker, Patterson is the second-best -- and he has size to boot. In Carolina's offense he'd work, even if Keenan Allen and DeAndre Hopkins might be slightly better.
44. Carolina Panthers: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Would you look at that? The Panthers pass on a defensive tackle in the first round and still wind up with a solid prospect. The position is deep this year.
Some believe Williams has first-round potential. While I disagree with that assessment, getting him in the second would be an excellent choice. Interestingly he has the Panthers passing on Kawann Short who gets taken by the Seahawks (rich get richer) with the 56th pick.
What do you think about this duo? Would you be happy with this pairing?
