The Panthers got a A+ for drafting a Star in the first round.
Dan Kadar calls the Panthers selection of DT Star Lotulelei at #14 the steal of the first round. I could not agree more.
A+ pick: Star Lotulelei, DT
Lotulelei was the steal of the first round of the draft and fills a big position of need for the Panthers. What else is there to say? Day 1 starter with Pro Bowl potential as a rookie.
Late-round find: Kenjon Barner, RB
If he can get on the field, Barner is going to be a nice weapon. Imagine him running option plays with quarterback Cam Newton. It's scary. Barner is so much faster than his timed speed. He could push Ted Ginn for the punt return job and will be a good kick returner.
Undrafted intrigue: Robert Lester, S
Lester had a draftable grade because of his natural size and solid ability in coverage and run support. He should be a decent backup and get a roster spot if he can play on coverage teams.
Though the day three picks seemed puzzling at first the more I think about them the more pleased I am with this draft class. We got a RG (Edmund Kugbila) though he may be a bit of a project. We got another solid LB (AJ Klein) to compete and contribute, maybe even at SLB if needed. Then we wrapped it up with a skill player (Kenjon Barner) that after I looked up his stats and highlights he could be a rare find as well.
I also love the UDFA signing of S Robert Lester as Kadar points out. The Panthers needed to get depth at safety and he seems to fit the 'box safety' many of us have been talking about. More on him to come shortly.
