Hi Panther fans! It is April 24th, 2014 and I'm writing to tell you who the Panthers selected with their first round pick.
With the 20th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected:
Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
After a 9-7 season and barely missing the playoffs, the Carolina Panthers earned the 20th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Ron Rivera is on the last year of his original four year deal, and is looking for the final pieces to push his team into the playoffs.
The 2013 Panthers greatly improved from 2012. The defense, with the notable additions of Starlite Lotulelei and Kawann Short, has become pretty stingy though the secondary lagged. The Offense also retained potency, however DeAngello Williams and Steve Smith have departed (Williams was released and Smith retired).
In the 2014 NFL Draft, the Panthers need a LT, RT, WR, S, and CB. The Panthers were hoping to nab Taylor Lewan, Jake Matthews, or Cyrus Kouandjio, however all three were taken in the top12. The Panthers could have gone with David Yankey, but there are some concerns about his future at LT. Haha Clinton-Dix and Loucheiz Purifoy, Ed Reynolds, and Bradley Roby were also DB options. At WR, Marqise Lee Sammy Watkins, and Brandon Coleman were also options although Watkins went before the Panthers.
In the end, the Panthers chose to go with Jordan Matthews, the big-play WR from Vanderbilt. At 6-3, 205, Matthews has incredible size. Although not a burner, he is a 4.5 guy that can separate with ease. At Vanderbilt, Matthews has put up incredible numbers. In his 2011 season, Matthews grabbed 94 rec for 1323 yds and 8 TDs.

What do you think Panther fans? Is he the missing piece? Or would you have preferred someone else?
