Trading down should be the best of our interest in the draft. We need more depth, this would give us a chance to fill all of our wants and needs with potential starters. This is very likely too. Since there isn't much stardom in this years draft, teams want that "top player".
- The Trade: 49ers 31st, and 34/ 61
- Our Needs: (WR, DT, OT, DB)
- Our Wants: (WR, TE, LB, K)
1st Round: SS Matt Elam
The Panthers need a top safety in this years draft. Lets face it, Haruki Nakamura will not get the job in 2013. So in this case we need another play-maker back there with Godfrey. Although we signed Mike Mitchell, he will be there as a backup to make sure Nakamura wont touch the field next year. Besides Elam is a BEAST! He is a hard hitting safety that can play the zone & man up with slot receivers. At best when improvising. One word, PLAY-MAKER! I think this kid will be a ball player at the next level.
2nd Round: DT Johnathan Hankins
Our need at DT is obvious. this is one of our biggest needs. We have the best pass rushers in the league in Gred Hardy and Charles Johnson. We also have a Pass rushing DT in Dwan Edwards but we need one to stop the run. Hankins was a force at Ohio St. An agile DT who can hold the Double team and has a quick burst. He plays sideline to sideline and he knows how to work down the line. He would be a favorable pick here.
2nd/3rd Round: WR Stedman Bailey/ WR Aaron Dobson
Smitty (Steve Smith) has about three years left. With this in mind, we need another Wr. After Smitty, we have Brandon LaFell, Domenik Hixon, Kealoha Pilares, Lamont Bryant, David Gettis, and Ted Ginn Jr. These guys are all role players and maybe 2 of them will be gone before the season starts. Bailey and Dobson are two of the most underrated Wr's in the draft. Both have the best of hands and excellent routes. Dobson 6'2 is an outside reciever and Bailey 5'10 can play both the outside or slot.
4th Round: TE Jordan Reed/ LB Jelani Jenkins
Play-makers, play-makers, play-makers! Florida is a play-maker factory! This is something that the Panthers roster lacks with only Cam Newton, Ted Ginn Jr., Luke Kuechly, and Smitty. Jordan Reed defines play-maker. He's a speedy TE with great hands and moves. He's versatile enough to play slot, H-back and TE. On the other hand, Jelani Jenkins is a Defensive Play-maker for the gators. He plays sideline to sideline and he knows how to play a zone coverage very well. He also has excellent speed for a LB.
5th Round: OT Reid Fragel
Cam Newton was sacked too many times last year. Even though he's built like a linebacker, he still needs protection for our offense to run smoothly. Fragel would be a great fit. He still needs some polishing but I see him as a solid starter in the pros. He started as a TE then switched to OT when asked to fill a need at Ohio St. He is athletic with long arms and quick enough to block DEs and ride them around the pocket. Has lots of potential.
6th Round: K Dustin Hopkins
We need someone who will nail those last second kicks in close games. We haven't had a reliable kicker since John Kasay. 6 of our games were decided by 6 points or less. That's 2 Field goals! This would have put our record at 13-3 and into the playoffs. Wow, what a diference the kicker makes. This is the best kicker in the draft and we need him. He has a boot and hes accurate, what else can you ask for. Did i mention he ran a 4.74.... just saying.
That's all from this mock. That's right, 2 guys from Florida and Ohio St. each. These programs are the best of the best when putting players in the NFL. I would be thrilled if our actual draft looked something like this. Well leave your comment below and rate my mock. Don't be scared, all criticism is encouraged and will be taken lightly.
