NFL Draft 2013: A Mid-Round DT To Keep an Eye On

USA TODAY Sports

As you would expect, the Carolina Panthers have been busy over the past few weeks bringing prospects to Charlotte in order to get a better sense of who they are as a person and how their particular abilities will fit on this team. Approximately three weeks ago, one such visit actually went unnoticed by many of the national reporters who are usually privy to such knowledge. Let's take a look at this mystery man for a few moments, shall we?

Until yesterday, I was only aware of five defensive tackles that the Panthers had brought in for a private visit: Shariff Floyd, Sylvester Williams, Kawann Short, Akeem Spence, and Brandon Williams. Chronologically speaking, former LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan should have been one of the first prospects included on this list, because according to the Shreveport Times he visited the Panthers on March 28th.

Ultimately, it matters very little whether he came to Charlotte early or late. The only significant nugget of information at this point is that the Panthers are interested in what Bennie Logan brings to the table, and this is good news, because I do too. Here is a quick look at his game by game statistics from his last two seasons at LSU.

Does Bennie Logan's stats have that 'Wow' factor? For the most part, no. However, it would be shortsighted to judge a player based solely on their stats, especially a defensive tackle. To get a more accurate understanding of any prospect, one must examine the game film closely, and his tape doesn't lie. Logan has a powerful base that he uses to hold the point of attack very well. His lower body strength is clearly evident in his ability to stop the run, which just so happens to be a major Panthers inadequacy. Logan isn't what you would consider to be an elite pass rusher, but his high character, strong motor, and solid fundamental foundation will pay dividends in this area when he gets some additional professional coaching.

Perhaps the most valuable piece to Logan's game is his ability to be a leader of men on and off the field, which was put on full display this past season when he was given the #18 jersey. That number dates back to 2003 when QB Matt Mauck led the Tigers to a National Championship win. Ever since then, the coaching staff has handed out that number in honor of the player that they feel best represents what LSU football is all about. The Panthers could definitely use a few more leaders, and Logan certainly looks legitimately ready for that responsibility at the next level. When you add all of Logan's strengths together, he has all the makings of a 4th round steal.
