I've been a long time reader and this is my first post, so I figured "Why not make a fanpost out of it??" Something that always struck me as interesting is that a lot of people are looking for Steve Smith's possible replacement this year. I, myself, think that we could wait until next year to grab either Sammy Watkins or Marqise Lee and focus on rebuilding the trenches on both sides of the ball in an effort to prevent Cam Newton running for his life all the time. Even so, I do think that there is a receiver in this year's draft that could possibly be our #1 receiver. I always hear of Keenan Allen, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Deandre Hopkins, but I hear very little on this guy. Making it even more interesting is the similarity in measurables and stature. Here is the comparison:
Smith/ Mystery Guy
Height: 5' 9" 5' 11"
Weight: 184 189
40 Time: 4.41 4.40
10 Yard Dash: 1.51 1.59
Vertical: 38 in. 37 in.
Broad Jump: 10' 1" 10' 0"
Smith: 40 Rec, 774 yards, 19.4 AVG, 4 TDs
Mystery Guy: 91 Rec, 1244 yards, 13.7 AVG, 11 TDs
Now, who is this mystery receiver??? Drum roll please............................................................................
It's none other than Markus Wheaton!!! Of course no one will be able to completely replace the enigma known as Steve Smith; however, if there was ANYONE who could best emulate Steve Smith's abilities over time in this draft, I believe that it is Markus Wheaton. He's a former track star who's speed translates well on the field. He rarely drops balls and has a nice catch radius for his size. He's also a very willing blocker and extremely tenacious; he never backs down and loves to be challenged. I believe that a year or two under Steve Smith could be really beneficial in his improvement on the football field; he has the ball-skills, tenacity, and character to eventually become a star in the NFL.
