Short is an intriguing prospect for the Panthers, and one they could look closely at in the 2nd round if they choose to draft a non-DT in the 1st round of the upcoming NFL Draft.
Here's a little tidbit on Short potentially landing in Carolina, from Rotoworld:
Short's evaluation slots him in the second-round, and the team absolutely needs help on the interior of their defensive line. The Panthers just re-signed Dwan Edwards, who consistently lined up as their three technique, but Short would offer a younger presence who could also play some five technique in a three man front. We wish Short turned on his motor every snap, however.
I don't know how high Short is listed on the Panthers' draft board, but they must have some interest in the former Boilermaker or they wouldn't have invited him to Charlotte for a meeting. This could be nothing more than Gettleman and Rivera doing their due diligence by investigating all the upper tier talent at defensive tackle, or it could be a signal that they anticipate taking someone other than a DT in the 1st round.
At this point we're not sure if Carolina is even interested in drafting a DT at all, but a lot of fans and pundits (the most recent being ESPN's Todd McShay) believe the Panthers will fill that position with the 14th overall pick. But, if the Panthers choose to go in a different direction in the 1st round, then Short could fit the bill for their 2nd round pick if he's still on the board when the #44 pick is due.
As always, stay tuned to CSR for any more details on the meeting between Short and the Panthers' brass, as we will provide any updates to this story as they become available.
