2013 NFL Free Agency: Panthers re-sign CB Captain Munnerlyn to one year contract

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

After turning down a 3yr/$5M deal, Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn has agreed to sign a one year contract for an undisclosed amount. Yes, you read that correctly.

In a strange turn of events, both Joe Person and Captain Munnerlyn have confirmed via Twitter that the veteran cornerback will return to Carolina for the 2013 season.

Here is a tweet from Person breaking the news:

And here's Munnerlyn confirming the news himself:

Now, some of you are probably wondering why Munnerlyn would accept a one year offer to stay with Carolina when it was rumored he had multiple offers from different teams. Well, join the club. This signing makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me. When Munnerlyn turned down the three-year, $5M offer that was made to him earlier this week it was almost a guarantee that he wouldn't return to the Panthers this season.

Add in the fact that GM Dave Gettleman has already inked one-year deals with veterans Drayton Florence and DJ Moore, and the retention of Munnerlyn makes even less sense. At this point, the Panthers have three nickel corners on the roster, and no true #1 lock down corner.

Unless they plan to run some kind of 3-1-7 defense or cut some of these corners off the roster during training camp, bringing Munnerlyn back seems like a waste of funds. However, it's not that big of an issue since Munnerlyn is only signed for one year, and even though the terms of the contact are currently undisclosed the amount of money involved will be minimal given Gettleman's recent contract offers.

As always, stay tuned to CSR for any new information on this story as we will reveal the contract details when they become available.
