2013 NFL mock draft: Four mocks bring new names for Panthers

USA TODAY Sports

CBS Sports have released four new mock drafts, and it offers a chance to explore some different prospects.

The 2013 draft happens in just over a month, and there's still numerous directions the Panthers can go. Where it's easy to see some team's short lists, Carolina are dependent on the top-ten. At this point it appears they're leaning towards a defensive tackle, or wide receiver -- but a lot can change. CBS Sports released new mock drafts this week, with four analysts offering up their opinion on the 14th pick.

One player who has been a fan-favorite, but gotten little love in mocks is Chance Warmack. His talent at right guard is undeniable, but can the Panthers afford to take a guard in the top-ten with their wide variety of needs? Rob Rang and Pat Kirwin think so.

Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama: Make no mistake, Cam Newton was his own worst enemy at times in his second NFL season but the Panthers haven't done a good enough job of surrounding him with talent. More pass-catchers will help but so too will a dominating left guard to fill between steady tackle Jordan Gross and center Ryan Kalil. Aggressive and powerful, Warmack is viewed by some scouts as the best player in the 2013 draft.

14. CAROLINA PANTHERS

Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama: Warmack will be graded much higher than the 14th spot, but guards haven't gone in the top 10 in more than 10 years. He's a 10-year starter with a few trips to the Pro Bowl.

The only offensive lineman the Panthers plan to meet with so far is Lane Johnson. Unless there's a change in the upcoming weeks and Warmack visits Charlotte, then cross him off your list because it isn't happening. No team is going to risk selecting a player in the first round without a visit first, and the only exception would be because a player believed to be unattainable was available on draft day. Warmack sits in the pick range, so if there's interest we'll hear about it.

Defensive tackle has been the popular pick for the Panthers, and it's clear to see why. They have to get tougher against the run, and this is an extremely good draft to need one. Both Dane Brugler and Pete Prisco think that's what the pick will be.

Dane Brugler

14. CAROLINA PANTHERS

Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida: If Floyd lasts this long, the Panthers might be surprised -- but not upset to see him still on the board. The interior of the Panthers' defensive line has been a question mark since Kris Jenkins left in 2007 and, ironically, Carolina hasn't invested a top-50 draft pick on a defensive tackle since Jenkins over a decade ago.

Pete Prisco

14. CAROLINA PANTHERS

Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri: Free agency has done nothing to fix the middle of their defensive line.

Of these two options Floyd is regarded as the better prospect. His ability to work in multiple fronts will appeal to numerous teams, and in Carolina he would offer a stout run defender with a lot of ability to penetrate the pocket.

What do you think about these four picks, and do you think Warmack should be in the consideration at #14?
