I decided to take a look at the draft's first 14 picks. I wanted to see who I though would be available at pick #14. I am not really happy with the results, because I had hoped something special might fall to us.
It is always possible that a lot of QB's are taken with a reach. And my mock has three reaches for QB. Unfortunately, I just could not find any WR reach to put on the board. Each team that could do that had another huge need filled with a very good option.
#1 KC - Luke Joeckel OT
They got their QB and have signed three WR's. They released their RT and franchised their LT. I believe they take an OT #1.
#2 Jax - Dion Jordan OLB
They just took their big swing for a franchise QB. Do they take another swing for Smith this year? I think they wait for a later round. Their other huge need is an edge rusher. Jordan may be the best on the board.
#3 Oak - Star Lotulelei NT
These guys need defense. They need DT, CB, LB, DE, and S. Wow. They need to trade back. They take the best available defender. If Star does not get high marks from the doctors, then he falls out of round one. If he does get high marks, he is drafted in the top 5. I do not see any hope of him getting a healthy checkup and still landing on the Panthers.
#4 Phi - Geno Smith QB
Chip Kelly has to have a QB, and Geno is the guy. They had a Private workout with Geno, so if he impressed, he is gone by pick #4.
#5 Det - Eric Fisher OT
One Tackle retired, and the other is not so great. This one seems pretty easy to predict.
#6 Cle - Dee Milliner, CB
I think they take Geno Smith if he is still there. Since he is not, I expect them to take Landry Jones in Round 2. They Signed Paul Kruger and Quentin Groves so CB is the next big need.
#7 Ari - Matt Barkley, QB
Arizona needs a QB. Kevin Kolb will not be back next season.
#8 Buf - Ryan Nassib QB
Buffalo needs a QB. The Bills have cut Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ryan Nassib led Marrone’s squad to a 21-17 record and probably vaulted him into the NFL coaching ranks.
#9 Jets - Jarvis Jones, OLB
The Jets need a QB, and they may take him here, but I just do not see one. They take an edge rush that is actually a value instead of a reach. Hardly seems realistic for the unpredictable Jets.
#10 Ten - Xavier Rhodes, CB
Tennessee needs interior OLine, Safety, and Corner. They signed Levitre G and Wilson S, so I think Corner is the way they go.
#11 SD - Lane Johnson OT
SD needs OT, OG, CB, and LB. They have signed Dunlap OT, Rinehart OG, Cox and Patrick CB. I think it comes down to Ziggy or Johnson on their board. It would be insane to let an LT slide past them at #11.
#12 Mia - Sharrif Floyd, DT
Miami needs WR, CB, and DT. They signed Wallace, Gibson, and Hartline for their receivers. They franchised Starks at DT. But I think they cannot take any CB over Floyd.
#13 TB - Ezekiel Ansah, DE
Tampa needs DE and DT. They take the best DL on the board.
#14 Car - Sheldon Richardson DT
So the best available for Carolina is Sheldon Richardson DT, Chance Warmack G, Alec Ogletree ILB, Jonathan Cooper G, or Bjoern Werner DE. We could reach for WR, or reach for CB. If Star is on the board here, then he will stay on the board into a later round and Richardson will be off the board. I really wish there was an NT or an OT here at 14, but there will not be one that we should take.
I cannot believe that I mocked three QBs in the first round, but a team must have a good QB. Even worse, with that happening, we still did not get Lane Johnson to fall to us. Maybe the Jets will take Austin and shake it up enough for us to get Lane Johnson.
We will have to get a NT in round 2 and a guard in round 4.
