Earlier today the Panthers picked up their team option on FB Mike Tolbert, ensuring that the portly back will remain in Carolina until 2015.
Hallelujah! The Panthers have finally made a move in free agency that doesn't consist of a one year contract! This huge splash - something that we've all been desperately waiting for - comes in the form of picking up the option on FB Mike Tolbert, who will now be a member of the Panthers backfield through the 2015 season.
A pair of tweets from Joe Person provide the pertinent information:
Joel Turner, aka @nflagents_net, tweets that #Panthers exercised Option on Mike Tolbert's deal today for 2014 & 2015.

Tolbert will make $1M this season; $2.3M in 2014 and $2.4M in 2015.

Of course, this isn't really earth-shattering news, but it's nice to know that the Panthers are doing something to keep players who are valuable to the team for more than one year. While Tolbert isn't a fullback in the mold of Lorenzo Neal, he was quite useful in the Panthers offense last season as a rushing and receiving threat out of the backfield.
There's still plenty of time left to go in free agency, but this could be the biggest splash the Panthers make with little money to spend and little desire to offer more than a one year deal to any outside free agent. With that being said, at least they did something to excite the fanbase, right?
