It's one of the most puzzling work outs you're likely to hear about this off-season. According to NFLDraftBible.com, the Carolina Panthers held a private work out with Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib. It has not been confirmed by any local sources, but if true, marks the most head-scratching move imaginable.
Nassib is not a mid-round quarterback prospect, or a late round option to back up Cam Newton. He is a legitimate early prospect, with analysts predicting he'll likely be selected at the top of the second round. The team can schedule as many on-campus visits as they choose, but have a finite number of players they can bring to Carolina for workouts.
In terms of quarterback prospects, he's an awfully good one -- and a player some believe will ultimately be the best in this draft class. Finishing his senior season with over 3,700 passing yards, and completing 62.4% of his passes, he's a solid option for teams needing a quarterback. The problem is, Carolina doesn't need a quarterback.
The initial, knee-jerk reaction is to make an over-reaching assumption that the team could trade Cam Newton, but this idea is ludicrous. Either the team are vastly underrating where Nassib will be selected, and hoping he's a 4th or 5th round option, or this is an effort by Dave Gettleman to better understand his scouting department.
It's a head-scratcher either way, and we'll see how it plays out.
