Jaxon's Post Combine Mock to #14

USA TODAY Sports

After researching team needs for the 13 teams picking ahead of us here's my prediction for how those picks will fall. I then have the top 5 players I think the Panthers will be choosing from followed by a fan poll for you to weigh in.

I got my team needs research at Drafttek which I think was pretty well on the money in it's evaluation. They have CB, WR, DT & OG as the Panthers top 4 needs in that order which I think most would agree is fairly accurate. So here's my top 13 mock draft:

Pick

Team

Player

Comment

1

Chiefs

OT Luke Joeckel

With the QB position solved it's time to protect his blind side

2

Jaguars

DE Barkevious Mingo

The Jags need a OLB for their new 3-4 defense and Mingo is the best all-around prospect of the OLBs available

3

Raiders

QB Geno Smith

So are we to believe they will settle for Carson Palmer and Terrelle Pryor competing at QB? I'm not buying it. I think they are just afraid of a Jags trade back hence the smokescreen.

4

Eagles

OT Eric Fisher

Though the Eagles need a 3-4 DE they can't pass on the LT with Peters coming off injury

5

Lions

CB Dee Milliner

As much as they desire a pass rushing DE, CB is also a huge need and Milliner is the top player left on their board

6

Browns

DE Dion Jordan

The Browns need a OLB pass rusher and Jordan has upside well worth this pick. He has 3 down potential.

7

Cardinals

OT Lane Johnson

LT is a huge need for the Cardinals and Fisher is too good pass up.

8

Bills

DE Ziggy Ansah

The Bills are great up the middle but have little on the edge. Ansah will give them that speed on the edge.

9

Jets

DE Demontre Moore

The Jets are also in need of an edge rusher and despite Moore's less than stellar combine his tape backs up the pick.

10

Titans

DT Star Lotulelei

I'm predicting the worries related to Star's health will dissipate enough for the Titans to pull the trigger at #10. They have a huge need at DT as well.

11

Chargers

DT Shariff Floyd

With no tackles worthy of this pick the Chargers gladly go d-line with the versatile Floyd

12

Dolphins

DE Bjoern Werner

I'm thinking the Dolphins address WR in free agency with all that cash they have and instead draft what they can't find in free agency, another pass rusher. Werner is better suited as a 4-3 DE who will be a nice bookend with Cameron Wake.

13

Buccaneers

CB Xavier Rhodes

The Bucs need a CB too bad to not take Rhodes who is well worth the #13 pick.

The Raiders are the wild card in my scenario and whether they will grab Geno Smith. I don't see how they pass on him unless they are secretly going 'Downey for Clowney'. No other player could have a bigger impact on their season then a QB like Smith. I also don't see another team trading up with the Jags to jump over the Raiders given the price it would take based on the Redskins trade to get RG3. One change is I could see the Jags taking Dion Jordan instead of Mingo but that would simply result in a swap between them and the teams I have them slotted for.

So here are the top 5 players I think the Panthers will be selecting from given the top 13 falls out in this order. Please note I'm sticking to Gettleman's stated mantra of using early picks on either players who can score, players who can rush the passer or big men.

1 - DT Sheldon Richardson - Richardson is the most popular player mocked to the Panthers and for good reason. His game is a good fit for the Panthers 4-3 scheme and the Panthers have a huge need at DT.

2 - WR Keenan Allen - I know most won't warm up to Allen until his Pro Day performance but the fact he is studying under the tutelage of WR coach Ricky Proehl should not be overlooked. Will the Panthers have him ranked over Cordarelle Patterson? I think so.

3 - CB Desmond Trufant - With the pending release of Chris Gamble the Panthers need to add a CB in this draft. This is not a reach in my view as he not only posted a great combine work out but he has the size (6'0), tape and bloodlines to a solid CB in the NFL for many years.

4 - Kenny Vaccaro - The Panthers have a need for a safety though I think Vaccaro might be better suited as a SS which is where Charles Godfrey is better suited. If its a FS that is more needed then I agree with BW that Cyprian would be the better selection here.

5 - OG Chance Warmack - From a needs standpoint this is an easy pick. We need a RG in a bad way and Warmack might be one of the best to come out in a several years. This is a plug and play pick.

So which of these five to do prefer? Check the poll and make your selection.
