When C Ryan Kalil went down with injury I knew we where going to have O-Line troubles. Geoff Hangartner had to play center and we had an revolving door at his vacant guard spot. Not only that but we got to see just how bad are Line depth was and how age has worn Piggy down. He was picked on by powerful bull rusher and showed he's a better backup then starter. When Piggy got injuried Jeff Byers got the start and we saw why he went Undrafted. He just plane sucks. Cam was forced out of the pocket to many times and we saw how terrible the Run Game could be without Kalil in the lineup. After 8 seasons and being on the wrong end of 30 its time Piggy's replacement is found.
Enter Penn State C/G Matt Stankiewitch. Standing at 6'3 and 303lbs with an Arm Length of 32 4/8 and 10 inch hands he put up a decent Bench Press at 27 Reps. Now hes only a 2 year starter at 25 games but in those 2 seasons he was voted a 1st Team All-Big Ten this season by the coaches, BTN.com and ESPN.com. He was 1 of 6 finalest for the Rimington Trophy and helped the Nitty Lions to lead the Big Ten in Total Offense, 437.0ypg, in conference play as well as rank 2nd in scoring offense, 32.66ppg, and 2nd in passing offense, 283.1ypg. He anchored a O-Line that had 3 games with 500 or more Yards in conference play and topped 546 yards against Indiana, its highest total in 4 seasons. he helped Matt McGloin break 9 school and career records this season, helped Allen Robinson break the Receptions mark, 77, and Zach Zwinak to rush for a 1000yds this season, gaoning 6, 100yd games against Big-Ten opponents. Also played in the East/West Shrine Game.
He is know as a better run blocker then his pass protection, he is a super tough gritty player who does a nice job extending off the snap with good hand placement and strong wrists. He's an assignment sound player who looks to eliminate defenders and blocks through the whistle. He only has 1 year of starting at experience, but has playing experience at guard and is a team leader. Lead all O-Line in snaps played the last 2 seasons. Has shown a nasty streak. Was sidelined with an illness for the last 6 games in the 2009 season. In the 2011 season game against #2 Alabama lead a line that produced 16 1st downs and did not give up a single sack to the the nations #1 Defense. That is damn impresive in my book.
He has potential to be a nice 6th or 7th round pick and has a lot of upside to develop as are new swingman in the interior line. Plus the name Stankiewitch would look pretty good on the back of a jersey.
