2013 NFL Mock Draft: Pre-Combine Edition

Kirk Irwin

I can't resist the urge to sport my first mock draft of 2013 NFL draft season. I've watched tape of the most common players being mocked to the Panthers in the 1st round. After that I'm just taking a swag at what players might be there with the focus on addressing need.

So here we go. James just featured this guy a few days ago and I have to agree on tape he looks like the real deal. I would be ecstatic to hear his name called for the Panthers as he seems just the kind of guy new GM Dave Gettleman would look for as well:

1st Round - WR Cordarelle Patterson

When I watched the tape of this guy several things jumped out at me. First was his ability to make the first would be tackler miss. The guy has incredible moves in the open field. Second is his body control. He knows how to set up the DB for the back shoulder throw, how to work the sideline as well as handle the deep over the shoulder throw. Third is his toughness. The guy shows tremendous after getting wrapped up in fighting for extra yards. His one draw back is I saw a couple key drops but I think in time he can correct that.

Mike Mayock seems to be joining the chorus of pundits:

Cordarrelle Patterson - College Player - 2013 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com
NFL Network's Mike Mayock has assigned a first-round grade to only two wide receivers in the 2013 draft: Tennessee's Cordarrelle Patterson and Cal's Keenan Allen. Mayock was particularly effusive in praising Patterson, who is a Julio Jones kind of wide receiver at 6-foot-3 and 200-plus pounds. "You put him on tape, and he’s going to take your breath away," Mayock said. "He’s a special talent." Mayock is interested to see how Allen runs at this week's Scouting Combine. Allen is more the possession/run-after-catch receiver, a Miles Austin type. Feb 18 - 2:28 PM

2nd Round - DT Kawann Short

Yes I know most mock drafts have Short going int he 1st round but someone has to drop. Maybe its Jesse Williams or even Sylvester Williams but my prediction is it will be Short and the Panthers pounce. Short is an immediate starter at under tackle.

4th Round - OT Chris Faulk

Faulk has the potential to be a starter at LT with some work and experience.

5th Round - S Josh Evans

At 6'2" 205 lbs Evans led the Gators in tackles and is strong against the run and pass. There is no doubt the Panthers need a safety with the expected release of Sherrod Martin. A draft deep at safety allows a player with a 3rd round grade to slip to the 5th.

6th Round - K Dustin Hopkins

The Panthers finally realize the best way to get a reliable kicker is to spend a draft pick on one. Hopkins beats out graham Gano and solidifies the kicker job for years.

So what do you think of this mock?
