As we all know, the Panthers have more needs than draft picks this year, and are around $15 million over the salary cap, causing them to cut some veterans to make cap room, also likely keeping them out of the FA market. This means they will likely have to do some bargain basement shopping among the UDFA's to fill out the bottom of their training camp roster. Fortunately, the Panthers have been pretty good at this over the last 2 years.
In an effort to see what talent might go undrafted, I searched through the 2/7/13 draft rankings at NFLDraftScout.com, for talented players that are currently ranked outside the 253 players that will be drafted this year, and here is what I've found (NC means not invited to the Combine).
RB's - This is one of the deepest positions of talent, and the Panthers may need a RB if they cut or trade D-Will.
Rank - Position - Name - Height - Weight - Comments
290 - RB - Robbie Rouse - 5'5 7/8" - 186 - Looks faster than he times
325 - RB - (NC) Dennis Johnson - 5'8" - 212
362 - RB - D. J. Harper - 5'9" - 207 - Big hands (10 3/8"), 1,000+ yds, & 5.0 YPC
373 - RB - Montel Harris - 5'8" - 206
393 - RB - Knile Davis - 6'0" - 226 - Slow recovery, only a 3.4 YPC
399 - RB - Spencer Ware - 5'11" - 225
407 - RB - Stephon Jefferson - 5'11" - 210 - Almost 1,900 yards rushing (4th rd by WF)
420 - RB - (NC)Washaun Ealey - 5'10" - 210 - Kicked out of Georgia as leading rusher
436 - RB - Chris Thompson - 5'8" - 187 - Has he recovered from knee injury?
QB's - The Panthers just need a 3rd QB.
262 - QB - (NC) Jeff Tuel - 6'2 3/4" - 221
274 - QB - Brad Sorensen - 6'4 1/4" - 237
355 - QB - Sean Renfree - 6'4" - 225
TE's - The Panthers top 2 backups are FA's, so they will likely need to sign 1 or 2 UDFA.
279 - TE - Lovine Toiloto - 6'7" - 265 - WF ranks him as a 3rd or 4th round pick
300 - TE - Joseph Fauria - 6'7", 257 - WF ranks him as a 3rd to 5th round pick
335 - TE - (NC) Lucas Reed - 6'6" - 249 - Brother is Texans OLB
345 - TE - (NC) Ryan Griffin - 6'6" - 254
427 - TE - Justice Cunningham - 6-4 - 264 - Good blocker
465 - TE - D. C. Jefferson - 6'6" - 255
OL's - The O-Line needs some more depth, even if they draft 1 or 2 O-Linemen.
331 - C - T. J. Johnson - 6'4 3/8" - 323 - South Carolina
348 - OT - John Wetzel - 6'7" - 313 - Boston College
368 - OT/OG - Travis Bond - 6'5 7/8" - 336 - UNC
463 - OT/OG - (NC) LeAdrian Waddle - 6'6" - 324 - Long arms (36") and huge hands (11 1/8")
491 - RT - (NC) Alex Hurst - 6'6" - 332 - Had a late season undisclosed meltdown
498 - OT - (NC) Elvis Fisher - 6'4 3/8" - 291
DT's - The Panthers need both starters, a NT and a UT, but they may have to try to get one as a UDFA.
289 - DT - Stacy McGee - 6'3 3/4" - 315 - Reportedly runs a 4.98-40
308 - NT - (NC) William Campbell - 6'4 7/8" - 318 - Big hands (10 3/8")
381 - NT - (NC) A. J. Francis - 6'4 7/8" - 321 - Maryland
439 - NT - (NC) Anthony Rashad White - 6'1 1/2" - 334 - Russ Lande loves him
493 - DT/DE - (NC) Baker Steinkuhler - 6'5" - 290
DE's - The Panthers really don't have a need, unless they think they will lose Hardy as a URFA next year.
364 - DE - Quanterus Smith - 6'5" - 248 - 12.5 sacks (2 against Alabama), but injured knee may keep him from playing his rookie season.
386 - DE - Armorty Bryant - 6'4 1/8" - 262 - Long arms (35 1/2")
LB's - The Panthers may need 1 or 2 just for camp if nothing else, but it's not a deep year for LB's.
276 - OLB - (NC) Cameron Lawrence - 6'2" - 233
366 - OLB - (NC) Travis Johnson - 6'2" - 244
DB's - The Panthers will need a couple for depth.
273 - SS - (NC) Ray Ray Armstrong - 6'3 1/4" - 227 - Gotten bigger & stronger, maybe a OLB
294 - CB - Steve Williams - 5'10" - 185 - From Cal & reportedly runs a 4.34-40
324 - SS - (NC) Jahleel Addae - 5'9 7/8" - 200
330 - CB - Demetrius McCray - 6'1" - 185 - From App St.
714 - S/CB - (NC) Prentiss Waggner - 6'2" - 187 - Was rated a mid round pick until recently
The draft doesn't follow these draft rankings, and the Panthers have drafted players ranked in the 400's recently (Jordan Pugh). Usually around 25-30 (maybe 5 on either side) not invited to the Combine are drafted each year. So the Panthers need to also keep an eye on the Regional Combines (started just this weekend), and the best players from these will attend the top Regional Combine (April 7-8th).
