The Washington Redskins are reportedly planning to interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for their vacant head coaching position, according to Joe Person.
McDermott has been integral in crafting the Panthers defense into one of the league's best, emphasizing pressure from the front seven in an effort to throw off opposing quarterbacks. Carolina currently ranks near the top of the league in points and yards allowed, while generating a league-high 60 sacks in 2013.
It's easy to get worked up about the time of the interview, one week before the Panthers face the winner of New Orleans and Philadelphia, but it really wont have any effect on the outcome of the game or the team's preparation. It's better to have the interview happen now than later in the playoffs, and McDermott has put his time in as an NFL assistant.
There is no indication on who could become defensive coordinator, should McDermott leave. It's tempting to peg another "promote from within" candidate in defensive line coach Eric Washington, but former Vikings coach Leslie Frazier is also available and has a long-standing relationship with Ron Rivera back to their playing days in Chicago,
