Final Play Against The Patriots Revisited

Streeter Lecka

I can imagine that most every Carolina Panthers' fan has moved on from the controversial final play against the New England Patriots, especially in light of the fact that the former walked away the victors. But if you will, allow me to give you one last take based on a very revealing vantage point.

I'll make this short and sweet.

A friend of mine attended Monday night's game and was able to video those gut-wrenching final seconds from the back of the end zone. Although it isn't the perfect angle, it does give a view unlike any other. This video confirmed what I already believed, which is this: Yes, there is no question pass interference occurred on the play. But interference that is worthy of a penalty didn't actually manifest itself until the ball was a split second away from being intercepted. There is absolutely no way Rob Gronkowski could have made his way back to the ball in a split second and caught a touchdown pass without interfering with Robert Lester, who removed all doubt by intercepting the pass. Frankly, it's as simple as that.
